How Kinesiology Tape Supports Advanced Lymphatic System Drainage

chichi lymphatic training kinesiology tape

After completing my recent Advanced Lymphedema Management Certification (ALM), one of the biggest tools I brought back into my practice is kinesiology taping for lymphatic support. Many people recognize this colorful tape from athletes, but in the lymphatic world it has an entirely different — and powerful — purpose.

Kinesiology tape can gently lift the skin to help move lymph fluid, reduce swelling, ease discomfort, and support healing between sessions. For clients with advanced lymphedema, this extra support can make a noticeable difference in comfort and mobility.

Today I want to share how this taping works, why I’m using it more often, and how it can help clients dealing with swelling — especially in the head, neck, and face, which are often more sensitive areas.

✨ How Kinesiology Tape Helps the Lymphatic System

Unlike athletic taping for joints, lymphatic taping uses gentle patterns and shapes designed to:

✔️ Lift the skin microscopically
✔️ Create space for fluid to flow
✔️ Reduce congestion and pressure
✔️ Support lymphatic drainage between sessions
✔️ Improve the results of manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)

The tape works 24/7 while you go about your day, helping to keep drainage moving even when you leave the treatment room.

✨ Benefits for Advanced Lymphedema

Clients living with more complex or long-term swelling can benefit from taping in several ways:

• Reduced swelling and heaviness
By improving local circulation and lymph movement, tape can ease the “tight” or “full” feeling that many lymphedema clients experience.

• Extended relief between appointments
Instead of only feeling better directly after a session, taping helps maintain progress through the week.

• Support for stubborn or sensitive areas
Certain regions — especially around the clavicle, behind the ears, and under the jawline — can hold on to fluid. Taping provides ongoing support without applying pressure.

• Comfort during daily activities
Tape moves with you, which is helpful for clients who experience swelling when they talk, eat, work, or exercise.

✨ Head, Neck, and Facial Lymphedema: A Special Focus

During my ALM training, we spent time learning how to safely address swelling in the head, neck, and face — areas where many clients feel self-conscious or uncomfortable because the swelling is so visible.

Lymphatic taping in these areas can help:

✔️ Reduce puffiness in the cheeks or under the eyes
✔️ Ease swelling after dental work, facial procedures, or trauma
✔️ Support clients recovering from head or neck cancer treatment
✔️ Improve comfort around the jawline and throat
✔️ Assist with post-surgical recovery (such as facelifts or neck lifts)

Because the tape is extremely gentle, it offers support without adding pressure — making it ideal for delicate areas.

✨ What to Expect During Taping

If taping is recommended as part of your session, here’s what the process looks like:

  1. We evaluate your swelling pattern and skin condition
  2. I cut and shape the tape into very gentle, wave-like patterns
  3. The tape is applied with almost no tension
  4. It stays on for 3–5 days (or longer, depending on your needs)
  5. You go home with extended lymphatic support working continuously

Most clients say they forget they’re even wearing it!

✨ Who Can Benefit from Lymphatic Taping?

Lymphatic taping is especially helpful for people dealing with:

• Advanced or long-term lymphedema
• Post-surgical swelling (cosmetic or medical)
• Facial procedures or trauma
• Autoimmune-related inflammation
• Head and neck cancer treatment
• Chronic swelling around the jawline, collarbone, or ears
• Sinus congestion and fluid retention

If you’ve felt frustrated with swelling that just won’t go down — taping may help.

✨ Bringing Advanced Lymphatic Care Back to Dallas

This certification gave me tools I’m truly excited to bring into the treatment room. I saw firsthand during training how effective lymphatic taping can be, especially for clients who need support between sessions or have swelling in challenging areas.

If you’re dealing with swelling in your head, neck, face, or anywhere else, and you’re curious whether kinesiology taping could help, I’d be happy to talk with you about your options.

Your comfort and healing will always come first. 💛
